Citizenships Award –
By Royal Appointment!
16 September 2011
On Tuesday 13th September a few of our Inspiration singers (the gallery was full with 16!), with Andy Booth on keyboard, were honoured to sing for a Royal guest, Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, at the Citizenship Award ceremony in Leeds Civic Hall. Accompanying her and representing our City were the Lord Mayor of Leeds and the Lord Lieutenant of Leeds. The purpose of this special occasion was for HRH to present certificates and mementoes to almost 30 new British citizens, making this a particularly memorable ceremony for them.
Gary Griffiths, our Music Director, sang and conducted our small number of singers in our offering of ‘Anthem’ and ‘World in Union’, with a verse of the National Anthem at the closing of the ceremony. Andy squeezed his keyboard into a corner of the gallery and gave a very enjoyable rendition of improvised show medleys as background music as we waited for our Royal guest.
We think Princess Anne appreciated our efforts as we had a smile and a nod of thanks and acknowledgement from her as she left the banqueting suite at the end of the official proceedings. We haven’t yet been informed whether this means that Inspiration can now claim to be a choir ‘by Royal Appointment’, but it was certainly a privilege for those of us who were lucky enough to be able to take part.
